I have to admit that I love coconut oil, and I have long used it in massage therapy Asheville, NC. It is my go-to oil in the kitchen whether it be for baking, sautés, or just melting on top of some greens. Many people know of coconut oil’s benefits in our diet, but did you know that it is extremely beneficial for our skin as well?
At Unity Healing Arts we use organic virgin pressed coconut oil so that we can offer you the best quality oil that we possibly can. This grade of oil is solid at room temperature up to 73 degrees, which is why you may notice that we heat our oil before using it in your massage.
Is there a difference between organic virgin pressed oil and the other options? Yes, without a doubt there is, and I very much encourage the use of virgin pressed oil for coconuts. This type of oil will be more expensive than the RBD options. RBD stands for Refined, Bleached and Deodorized. In the process of producing RBD oil some of the oils may become partially hydrogenated, reducing its health benefits. The process may also use chemicals and may not be as clean from a sanitation perspective. Virgin pressed oils come from fresh coconut meat rather from dried coconut copra.
Is it important to buy organic? As a rule of thumb, I support organics, I believe that for the health of our bodies, the Earth, and from a sustainability standpoint, it is necessary that we return to more organic practices and desist in the use of chemicals, pesticides and non-organic fertilizers. In the case of the coconut palm, I have found that according to research, nearly 90% of the worldʼs coconut palm trees are grown organically. The coconut palm is a hearty tree that has natural ant-microbial / pest qualities. Also, many of the coconut farmers of the world may not have the money to buy fertilizers to begin with. The classification of “organic” may be less important in the case of the coconut than other plants and crops.
Coconut oil can help to rebuild youthful, supple skin while combating the signs of aging. Signs of aging occur when free radicals cause the connective tissue in the skin to break down. Coconut oil’s high antioxidant levels slow the harmful effects of free radicals in the body. This prevents the damaging actions that lead to signs of aging. Coconut oil is high in vitamin E, which is known for its skin healing properties. It has long been used to treat various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema, and other skin infections.
Coconut oil can be used to help heal wounds, infections and burns. The lauric acid in coconut oil has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Thus coconut oil can be used to help heal infections, cuts, and minor burns. In addition, coconut oil can help to cure and prevent acne. It is helpful in encouraging a pH balance that allows one’s natural oils to combat infection.
